400EX problems
Hi all I am new to the list, but I have a issue. I am trying to sort out my brothers 2001 400EX. It has sat for a while, so I did the usual, cleaned the carb it was not very dirty so i didnt tear it down, just sprayed it out pretty good, changed the oil and filter, and a new battery. Now it is cutting out at upper rpm's and will idle ok but not great. I have a new plug, but I cant get the old one out. That is part two of my question, I guess I need the special socket to get it out? (any help with that would be great also) It starts ok with little pressure on the throttle, but it sounds like it is missing every so often, and ride it around and get in to it and it cuts out. I am not really good with carbs just yet. If you can please help!! Thanks

Youll need the thin wall 18mm socket for the spark plug. Check the tool kit, it should be in there, other wise try the dealer. It should help to change the plug, and see if the engine performance changes for the better. If it doesnt, then the carb will need a better cleaning. Unless the jets are unscrewed, and cleaned, they realy dont get clean by spraying them from the one side.

400EX problems
I am sure the valves have not been adjusted as long as my brother has had the bike, which is I think about three years. As for the tool kit it is long gone. I just got a 2007 Rancher 4x4ES, would my plug socket be the same? I know they use the same oil filter. Forgive me if I sound dumb to all this. I will see if it will. I tried to pull the carb, but the throttle cable would not come out of the top of the carb. When I tried to unscrew it it would come up like 3 to 4 turns and get stuck, and I didnt want to force it. Any ideas there? I have a service manual on the way, and a socket on the way, but will not get those till late next week. Thankis for all your help!!!

Ok I "tinkered" with it and looking at a few old postings, got the top end back. But it likes to stall at idle, not too bad but I think the new plug will help that as soon as I get the socket. Oh BTW rancher and 400ex spark plugs are diffrent sizes. Thanks again to those that helped me, will keep the updates as soon as UPS get me my stuff!!!
