This sob is the hardest to get started cold I've ever seen. After it's warmed up and all it starts right up but cold u have to fully choke it then it's STILL hard as hell to get going.
a few min ago went out to ride again it has been sitting for a couple hrs so I try to start it with no choke on (ha good luck) so choke it and it tries a couple times now it won't hit a lick..flooded that easy???
hate to relate back to my 300 but my 300 could sit a month I would choke it for the intial start then back the choke off pretty fast then the rest of the day i wouldn't have to choke it and it would fire right up this one u have to choke each time on a cold start??? what a joke.

Summer should be different, but this time of year,I wouldnt be surprised to have to choke the motor, if it were cold to the touch.
The air box lid is on....correct? If its off, itll really lean it out.
You can go to a #40 pilot jet, like most of us have, and it makes the cold start and warm up much easier.
Try to not touch the thumb throttle til the motor fires on its own, because they can flood easily if you get carried away with the thumb.

could be? I'm just not used to having to choke a atv to start it if i've already started it and brought it up to operating temp earlier that day.
my 300 would start first lick both of ours would after the first start of the day which was a pretty easy start itself.
could be they're just a cold natured engine compared to what i'm used to? after it's warmed it ofcourse it hits first lick but before that is more of a hassle than i'm used to.

It has a pumper carb, so hit the throtle several times before a cold start and it will inject raw gas.
Also, Honda jets lean to meet emissions standards so that is a factor, as well as the fact that the air is colder. If you are like most folks, you will be doing lots of mods and will need a rejet for those anyway....so I say just live with it until then.

Yep, and like reconranger said, the jetting on the idle circuit is a bit lean. Everyone who upgrades to a #40 pilot really likes the difference, its one of the cheapest and better mods for the 400.
