Lake Erie Ice Riding
#1
Has anybody ridden his or her quad from Port Clinton (Ohio) to South Bass Island? I am planning to go ice fishing the beginning of February and was wondering if there was an alternate way to get South Bass. Rumor has it there is a fairly heavily traveled road/path. It is my understanding that the only other way to get there in the winter is by puddle hopper ($50 round trip).
Any help about the logistics would also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Paulk,
I haven't done it myself, but I also heard there is a marked road across the ice that goes out to the islands. Supposedly they mark it with pine trees and it is plowed. But, with this latest mini thaw (40 degrees), I would check into it before assuming the road will be open. I would not recommend driving out there until we get another good extended freeze. The ice can shift easily when we get a little warm-up.
Wish I could tell you more, I'm just going on what some of my ice-fishing friends have told me. I gotta believe there is a DNR number that can give you info on ice conditions, etc.
