buying an 1988 trx 250r?
run it through all the gears
look around the foot pegs for cracks or welds in the frame
look to make sure the frame does not appear to be bent or welded in other areas
look at the front end and how the wheels sit to see if it has a bent knuckle or something like that
make sure its an 88, if it is an 88 or 89 the serial number is located under the front plastic on a cross member of the frame. It can be rather hard to see. The 86 and 87 have it on the frame left side near the back. The 88 and 89 also have the headlight built into the front plastic.
when riding it you can pay attention to see if the axle is bent
look at the rear carrier and see if anything is loose because of bad bearings and do the same with the front wheels, make sure the ball joints are good
If you really want to be through, have him drain the case oil and let you see what is in it, he might not do that though.
look at the fins on the radiator and make sure they are in good shape
other than that do the normal checks you would usually do
