weak 400 at rancher
I just bought a 2004 400 rancher at gps all the bells and whistles,
26" titans on rear and 25" big horn radials on front.
really low hrs and miles (new $500.00 clutch from honda) paid for by me
new emc from honda. warr. work.
2500 lbs. winch.
bike runs great, but the problem I have is in 2 wheel drive it spins the tires great,
but in 4 wheel drive it wont spin the tires and just revs to the stall of the clutch...doesnt matter if in auto or esp mode same results
My question is are the 400 ranchers just weak, or is there another problem,
are the tires to big? or what?
Thanks
Al

Your power loss stems from the drivetrain binding in 4x4 mode because of your tire sizes.
The front and rear differentials are geared to run the same actual height tires. Doesnt matter if you run 25s, 26s, or 27s.... so long as the front and rear are the same.
Granted,..not all tire brands,..or models for that matter, actually read the number specified if you measure it. Thats why it's always a good idea to run the same brand and style tires on the front and rear.
As for the 400AT being underpowered in general,..it is compared to other 400 class ATVs, but it shouldnt have any problem turning 26" Titans. I think yours is weak due to the front trying to pull faster than the rear because you are running smaller tires up front.
