looking for advice

I am looking to buy my first quad and trying to decide what to buy. I plan on trail riding (I'm to old for all the racing stuff) and was wondering if anybody has any input on a 2002 Honda TRX 400 FA Rancher 4x4 Automatic. I can pick one up thats in great shape for around $2840.00. Is that a fair price? Anybody know anything about these quads and are they reliable, have enough power, good, bad, ugly. Any feedback???
Thanks

Every once in a while you see threads about the hydrostat auto, usually a bad angle sensor or corroded connector or something. Generally I think the 400 is quite reliable. Power wise, though, they are pretty uninspiring. Price wise, I haven't shopped for Ranchers but I think you might do a little better. Search some of the ATV classified sites to get a better idea.
Since you are totally new to the sport, I'd suggest going with someone who's experienced, or maybe even taking one of the rider education classes. These things are a lot of fun, but protective gear, skill and judgement are needed to reduce the risks...
Anyway, welcome to the forum.

I ride a '02 450 Foreman 4X4. I have the clutchless manual so cannot speak to the tranny but Hondas seem to have a pretty good handle on reliability. I am not unhappy with the power especially on the trails where I ride. Mostly mud and technical rock/ root riding.
I paid $2300 for mine from a friend.
NADA lists the 02 Foreman 400 4X4 at $2,050 low retail and $2,695 high retail. Offer $2400 and see where it goes.
