protective gear

Riding pants usually have heat guards on the inside of the calfs to protect you from the exhaust / motor heat, and they are formed to fit inside of racing boots (or riding boots). The boots are stiff and provide a great amount of help with your calf muscles absorbing the shock from landing jumps (I've ridden with and without riding boots, and my legs kill me if I don't wear riding boots). The boots will require you to loosen your netting on the nerf bars since they are bigger and are made stiff, but they are easy to shift with once you loosen the nerf bar netting. The riding boots will be a really good investment if you want to be able to ride longer without getting any type of lower leg aches and pains (or cramps).
One more thing, you don't really "break in" riding / racing boots, they are meant to be stiff and are a little uncomfortable at times. They are mostly there for protection and stiffening / support of the lower leg.

Riding boots are stiff, because they are meant to be that way....that is what is going to same your feet, ankles, and lower legs!!!! If a boot is to flexible, you might as well have just worn your tennis shoes......
One beauty of riding pants is that they keep you warmer than jeans. When you are sliding through the air, it gets colder. Plus, jeans can tear in a crash, where the riding pants will hold up so you don't end up with road rash.
And while we are on the subject of protective gear, if folks would start wearing the neck braces, I think we would eliminate many of the severe injuries. A broken leg or arm will heal, but not a broken neck!!
