I don't think I'd run a 12 c/s. You have already geared down by running the 20" tires and going to a 12 tooth would cost a fair amount of top end in addition to that. You may want to try a 14 to reinstate the original gearing and in fact for more top end, if you feel your style warrants it, run a 15 if you have the clearance & chain slack.

I would go to a 14 tooth to make up for the smaller rear tires. Bring the 13 tooth with you in case you race somewhere where it is all tight trails, then the lower gearing might help you. Due to the short wheel base on the 300ex, if you gear too low, it will wheelie too easily out of the corners. We all know what happens mid-corner when the front wheels come off the ground.
