is my motor running hot

What atv did that? If its getting that hot you are going to melt your bearings and seals. You either are working it too hard or you got a blockage in the oil passage that allows it to cool. I would drain and check to see if any particles in the oil or the filter.

What oil weight and what brand you running? Sometimes running a lighter oil that is more pumpable will improve cooling. On the other hand, light oils aren't going to stand up to the heat as well, unless it is a synthetic.
My most recent Honda purchase, the Rancher 420, specs 0W30 as a year round oil....go figure!
