Will running without the spark arrester hurt anything?
#1
Awhile ago, I was cleaning the sparky on my 400ex, and longstory short, I stripped out a bolt for the spark-arrester, and I haven't put it back on since. I would like to know if it's harmful to run without the spark arrester? Thanks. Oh, BTW, if needed I can retapp the bolt hole, but like the sound of it with no spark arrestor.

I don't think it will hurt, but I am no expert on exhausts. I heard if you take your whole pipe off, the cold air that enters the header can hurt the valves when the engine is shut off. I have taken my spark arestor out a few times, and mine is still running good. It sounds awesone, but for a long trail ride, it would get to me. plus mud, water and other crap will find it's way in the back of the pipe. Just to be safe, I would keep it on. Unless someone who knows what they are talking about says otherwise. It still probably don't hurt.

dn't worry about it my firned with a '00 400EX purposley took his off. we've had it in really deep water, we've had it flipped over in water, we've had it stuck in the mud, we've had it stuck in the water (multiple times for all of those) and its still fine.

You cant take the spark arrester out on stock honda pipes, only the bottom tray plate that dumps the carbon comes off. The baffle is also removeable with those 2 8mm bolts but that is just a silencer, not the spark arrestor as its strait threw. With the baffle out, look inside the pipe with a flashlight and you will see a turbin type deal and thats the non-removable spark arrestor. You can safely ride with the baffel out, but reamber we dont need more ATV haters out there that get annoyed by loud pipes. Joe

I took out mine on my 250ex today, and it sounds awsome. Ill probably put it back on until I findout its safe since ive only had the machine for 3 weeks. I cant really see what damage it will do though.
