I'm curious as to whether anyone knows if the results of the Dirtwheels Exhaust shoot out are found anywhere on Line. My problem is I don't have time to get a copy of the magazine and am not a subscriber, now. If anyone has any hints or suggestions I'd be happy to hear. Thanks to everyone that might help.

 

NO, I haven't seen it online. Basically the pipe that made the most horsepower was the White Brothers series -E & one other. They gave the shoot out to White brothers since their pipe was much quieter than the other. I can't remember the name of the other pipe. There were about 10 pipes or so in the shootout.

If you are interested then go down to the local ATV shop & pickup a copy. Come on spend the $5!!!!!!!!!

 

The other slip-on was by CT racing. With the air box opened and a K & N filter both the CT and E-series made an impressive 1 horsepower over the stock silencer.

 

That's funny, because when I looked at the graphs I saw a 4-5hp gain in the midrange, I'd say that's pretty damn significant. They made only 1hp more peak, but made TONS more midrange power and torque, which is awesome when riding around in the dirt. In my mind the only place that peak power is most important is at the dunes or on a straight-line drag race (whoopie, like that doesn't get old).

 

I agree 100%. Most of the slip-ons had respectable low and mid gains. This is what really matters for riders that are not wide open in some field all of the time. I was just venting because peak horsepower gains are hyped up so much, when in reality, the peak gains are usually minimal. One thing that caught my eye is the new type of slip-ons for the 400ex (2-stroke type) seem to make less power than the older set-ups (CT and E-series). The E-series was one of the first slip-ons out for the 400ex and it's still the best.

Yes a slip-on is just the silencer not the silencer and the head pipe combined.

 

Okay, since you guys "know everything" Is there any reason to buy a header pipe, if you're not going to mod the engine? I know dirt wheels said it was okay, but... ya know.. they're a magazine!

 

there's no dummy's at honda and its hard to beat honda's exhaust.if you go to gt thunder's web(www.geocities.com/gtthunder.geo)in the bench test/400ex they test a stock machine versus no airbox and this is without rejetting and a k&n.all that midrange gain wasn't the pipes,nor the dip before peak-do after market exhaust really out perform the stocker?the shoot out was biased(they should of tested the stocker with the same airbox/jetting/filter mod.all you really gain with a pipe is noise,pretty looks,less weight and an empty wallet-)a HIGHLY modified machine will gain more with a megaphone and bigger headpipes though)
