The 400at is the only unit that this can and must be done to to initialize the ECM.
I don't have a manual in front of me so here goes by memory...
-Raise the rear of the unit and remove the rear tires (the rims and tires must be removed because the centrifugal force of them changes the swash plate angle in the transmission unit). Support the rear of the unit
- Transmission must be in neutral
- Switch tranny to MANUAL mode
- Select the 2wd mode
- Key off, turn on while holding the up and down shift buttons (this will get you into the ecm), release the shift buttons.
- Within a few seconds press the shift buttons in this order up, up, down, down. The display should alternately flash "N" and "--" when done properly.
- Once in this mode, start the quad move the shifter to drive and shift up to 5th gear ("5" and "--" will flash on the display in the gear position segment)
- hold the front brake and accelerate until the speedo reads 19 to 21 mph, hold it there until the gear position stops flashing and only reads gear position "5"
- The ECM is reset except for a few more steps.
- let the unit decellerate to 0 mph
- shift down to 1st gear
- Slip the shifter into neutral
- Turn off the ignition and reinstall the rear tires.
Now, reinitialize the unit in the normal way... drive ahead normally about 5 feet (this is needed for a speed sensor signal)
Key off, depress both up and down shift switches and turn key on, release switches and within a few seconds from releasing, depress the shift switches up (only once) and down then sweep the throttle wide open and let off. Shift indicator display will read a solid "--" when done correctly. The shift control motor will cycle, then when the display reads "N" in the gear position on thte display, initialization is complete.
Like I mentioned before the 400AT is the only Honda that needs complete initialization as described above.
Hopes this helps out your speed issue
