Default How to set the valves on a 1987 trx350d

I have a 87 foreman 350d. Just bought the bike and dont know much about it other than it runs great but smokes when first started. Might need the head rebuilt? Right now the smoke doesnt bother me and I would like to make sure that the valves are set correctly. Any help????

i highly reccomend buying a shop manual. but its an over head valve engine so not too hard. if its like other hondas remove the gas tank and anythin els that is in the way of the engine. then you should be able to remove the valve cover.

turn the engine over with the pull rope until its at TDC on the compression stroke, both valves should be loose at the rockers. the clerance should be around .15mm or .006in. if not ther is a lock nut you can loosen with a wrench and you can move in/out a center skrew. it usually takes a few tries before they you get the hang of it, so take your time.

but i would recomend getting a shop manual first, it will have more information on how to do this. it is something you can do at home though

Thanks for the instructions on setting the valves.

One more question. It smokes at first start up. I am guessing that the smoke is coming from leaking valve seals. Are they an umbrella seal? Do you have to remove the head to replace?
