2002 4x4 rancher 350 valve adjustment help
#1
My dad has a 2002 rancher 350fe. It is in bad need of a tune up. The owners manual says the lash should be .006. What i was wondering was do i need to find TDC on compression storke then adjust the intake and the exhaust at the same time? My dad dosen't have the service manual for it and I can't afforrd to buy it. Both my dad and I lost our jobs in October so money is tight. He came to my house the other day to go hunting and that is when i noticed the ticking from the valves. I was hoping i could find some help on here. Thanks

Yes you need to find TDC on the compression stroke and adjust both intake and exhaust valves at the same time , no need to turn the crank anymore to adjust both intake and exhaust valves ; thats only required on twin cyclinder engines !
But it's very important to make sure you're on the compression stroke that's why the manual say's to turn the crank a little past the " T ' mark the first time to ensure you're on the compression stroke for sure ; i found it easier to remove the spark plug and put my finger in the hole to feel the pressure it made the job faster !
And also you will be able to wiggle the rocker's when both intake and exhaust valves are in the closed position , not really a hard job to do once you done them once ; another tip is to recheck the gap/lash more than once when you tighten the locknut to ensure that it didn't tighten them to far on the first try !
You should be fine and after you've done them once it's alot easier and faster the next time , good luck fromthehills ; and welcome to the forums !.........

A quick way to determine tdc is to turn the engine over in normal direction, watch the intake valve. As it closes, keep turning the engine watching for the TDC mark to come up in it's timing check hole shortly after the intake closes

It needs to be done when the engine is cold , best to let it sit overnight unless it's left outside or in an unheated garage ; good luck with the job at hand it's not a hard job to do !...........

Honda recommends cold. Cold at one time was let known to us Honda techs as 86 degrees, engine temp
