Roll overs, tip overs and steep hill climbing and descending will cause oil to get into the air box from the crank vent hose. Also if you over fill the oil level the excess oil will blow into the air box as well.

Just clean it out,and make sure you oil level in correct. Happen to me and others I ride with a few times, does not seem to hurt anything but can't be good for the ATV's breathing if the air filter gets oil on it.

Perhaps your rings are bad? That allows compression to get past the piston and into the crankcase. From there, the only place it has to go is out the breather hose. In the process, it takes some crankcase oil with it....

It is puzzling however, because the crankcase breather on the 400EX is after the airbox. The only place for oil to come from is from the breather, and it should get sucked up into the carb and not back into the airbox.

Check your breather. It has a white plastic reservoir on the end. Is it loaded with oil????

On the Rancher, the breather is in the airbox. It is that slot under the air filter, that should have a piece of foam in it. If you haven't overfilled the crankcase, most likely you are passing compression.
