Default newbie 2WD ATV question

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Originally posted by: goozyman

hello all.

I have the opportunity to get a Honda 450r.

I want to do trail riding and some muddy stuff.

I know its a race bike and only 2WD, but does this thing have what it takes to do some real off roading?

Im only asking because i currently use another 2WD bike [85 Fourtrax 250] and it is quite competent in the woods.

anything i should look for when buying an 06 honda 450r?

thanks</end quote></div>

Real off-roading??? This machine is the king of endurance desert racing. You know, start it up and ride 1,000 miles non-stop! Sounds pretty "real" to me.....

But.....this engine needs to be ridden reved out. Plus, it is geared tall. Mine goes 25 mph in 1st gear at idle. So, it is a pain to ride in the tight/technical stuff. This quad is best at riding screaming fast in open country and desert. On a slow trail it requires a lot of annoying clutch slipping.

If you are a trail rider, the 400EX, Z400, or Raptor 700 are better choices.

They do make light weight 22"to 24" Mud tires that still have aggressive lugs,it should help alot yet not destroy the fun sport ride of the ATV.

The Suzuki is less revy than a 450, but more revy than a 400EX. The Z is a good all around machine, but I like the EX better for really tight trails, becasue its engine will lug down and can idle through in 1st gear.
