newbie 2WD ATV question

hello all.
I have the opportunity to get a Honda 450r.
I want to do trail riding and some muddy stuff.
I know its a race bike and only 2WD, but does this thing have what it takes to do some real off roading?
Im only asking because i currently use another 2WD bike [85 Fourtrax 250] and it is quite competent in the woods.
anything i should look for when buying an 06 honda 450r?
thanks</end quote></div>
Real off-roading??? This machine is the king of endurance desert racing. You know, start it up and ride 1,000 miles non-stop! Sounds pretty "real" to me.....
But.....this engine needs to be ridden reved out. Plus, it is geared tall. Mine goes 25 mph in 1st gear at idle. So, it is a pain to ride in the tight/technical stuff. This quad is best at riding screaming fast in open country and desert. On a slow trail it requires a lot of annoying clutch slipping.
If you are a trail rider, the 400EX, Z400, or Raptor 700 are better choices.
