I did mine on my 87 250X just a few days ago. Get a Clymer. You definitely need a Clutch Holding Tool ($15 at Rocky Mtn. ATV). There's 81 ft lbs on the Clutch nut. Take the chain off, put it in gear, and hold the drive sprocket with the tool. The clutch nut has a kind of skirt on it that is bent into a keyway on the shaft to hold it from backing out. You have to bend the skirt away from the keyway before you can loosen it. You might get lucky and be able to reuse the nut but for a few bucks, you might as well get a new one just in case. Make darn sure you soak the new plates in oil before install or you'll trash them in a hurry. Also, if the sides of the clutch basket have grooves in it that aren't too deep, they can be filed smooth. But mine were pretty deep so I got a really nice used basket from ebay for $20. <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://myworld.ebay.com/sport-atv-salvage/

New ones are over $200. I got the clutch and heavier springs from RM and like it a lot. $50.

you dont need a clutch holding tool to tighten that nut....just use an aluminum washer between the gears of the basket and the crank then take acouple clutch springs with the bolts with washers to keep the bolt from falling through the spring, install them and you can torqe the nut down.

But you need the tool to get the nut off. Or at least it's the easiest way without risking breaking something.</end quote></div>
you put the washer on the underside of the gears...works every time for me nothing broken.....just gotta make sure its an alum washer though.

Did you buy a new clutch cover gasket? You'll probably need one of those.
