I heard another say that to remove from 4 wheel, they had to back up about 15 feet after selecting the shifter to 2 wheel. Does that sound correct?

No. just pull lever toward rider for 2wd light goes off you can keep
going forward. not like unlocking the hubs on a pick-up where after you
shift you drive backwards.

The owner's manual isn't really clear on whether you need to stop to go in or out of 4wd, but I will always stop unless it is an emergency and I need to get into 4wd really quick. It seems like the quad needs to move a couple feet before the 4wd light will go out....but needing to back up...no.

Reconranger

I buried my operators manual out of reach, but I recall reading about this, and that it wasn't clear to me what one could or couldnt do, and what to expect from the lockin/lockout either.

I don't remember anything specific in the manual either, but the dealer did say to me when I bought my Rancher that you should come to a stop and put the machine in Neutral before moving the lever. I've been doing this and the green LED that indicates 4x4 always goes on or off within a foot of forward movement or so.

Has anyone else heard this? Recon - do you put it in neutral before shifting?

you can keep it in gear, come to a full stop and take it out of 4x4 or put it in 4x4. Some times I don't come to a full stop and take it out of 4x4 at very low speeds.

My manuel says don't remove your hand from the handlebars while moving, so it would be impossible to shift it on the go. My dealer said under 3 mph.

I've shifetd in and out of 4wd while moving at slow speeds all the time. Never heard any grinding or felt and jolts doing this. I do agree to check what's in front of you before taking your hand off the handlebars.
