These are prone to getting their idle (slow/pilot) jet gummed up because of stale gas. This means that you have to much air for the amount of gas, and that leaves you lean. The choke cuts down on the amount of air, and temporarily fixes the problem. Most likely all you need a good carb cleaning, and pay particular attention to that jet.
Otherwise, it could be a leak in the air filter or the intake boot. It is important to eliminate this possibility, as it can pass dirt into your engine.
