Default whats the trick to put a shift plate on?

Im trying to replace a broken shift plate on an 02 rancher es. i got the new plate but can not get it on and over the stud that sticks up and is supposed to go in the new plate. The other end of the plate hits on the gear that is behind the clutch. I am wondering what the trick is or if i am missing something. Thanks

no i did not remove the clutch, i didnt know that i had to. I guess since the shift plate was broke it came off the shaft. Since the new one is all in one piece i guess i will need to remove the clutch? What is the procedure to do this? Does just the clutch closest to it need to be removed?

can i just losen the nut on the clutch and it will lift up a little which will lift the gear up out of the way enough to get the new shift plate on?

Yes, slip the clutch basket ahead after removing the oil crossover tube. No need to pull the centrifugal clutch.
