What numbers of oil should I use for my 2001 Honda TRX400EX?

Example: 10W40

I use 10w40 in cold weather and 20w50 in warm (Bel-Ray oil) seems to work great in my 400ex but its like 8 or 9 bucks a qaurt... Whatever oil you use, ask and make sure if its fine for wet clutches.

Keep in mind that the 400EX has an old school air cooled engine! These engines run hot and have slacker tolerances, so they require oil that is a little thicker, to bridge the wider gaps between the moving parts. (If you had a more modern water cooled engine like a 450R or Rancher 420 for example, your owner's manual would most likely spec thinner oils.

In summer 10W40 works in most of the continent. 15W50 if you are in the very hot south. 10W30 if you are in the forzen north.

In winter 10W30 in much of the country, and if you are in the frozen north or at high altitude, then 5W30 (but change it out the minute the weather turns warm again).
