Question 02 Honda 350 Rancher smoking

I just rebulit a 02 Honda rancher 350. The cylinder was in spec. I replaced the piston, rings and installed a new head and valves. I have checked the oil level and everything else I can think of and it still smokes as soon as it cranks. It seems to be getting oil from the head that is why I replaced it. If I take the carb. off and look in the intake, I can see fresh engine oil. When I remove the plug and turn it over with my finger over the hole, a mist of oil comes out. The cylinder top is not warped ither. Any ideas????

Well if it has a new head with new valves & valve seals that should rule out valves/seals or guides .. When the cylinder was checked for clearance was it checked for out of round..

Did the rings go on smoothly? Are you sure you put them on correctly? Was the head new or reman?

The head was new. I checked the ring end gap in the cylinder and checked the cylinder for out of round with a micrometer. I did install the rings with the idenificaton mark up and I had no problem installing the rings. One thing I noticed is the right front oil stud ( looking at the motor sideways with the plug at the bottom ) had oil filled up in it. The only way this could happen is if the oil passed through the rocker arm assy. and then into the RF hole for the stud. This should not matter anyway because it should not get into the cylinder. The oil galley is on the left front.

I have a 2005 350 rancher es and on a recent atv trip my atv started smoking then started blowing some oil from the exhaust. It had little power and wouldn't rev up, however idled just fine. I was thinking/hoping it was a bad exhaust valve but upon taking it into the shop, I'm told it is a warped cylinder. I was told it was from the engine being air-cooled and driving thru water, cooling the the engine to quickly.

Not sure if that is accurate b/c I've done a lot of riding and owned previous hondas and never had (or heard of) a warped cylinder...I have not replaced the parts yet wondering if you can respond.

Thanks,

How much oil does it use?? and how bad is the smoke? maybe it just needs to be seated in?

After I really started to notice the smoke and oil coming from the end of the exhaust tip, I ran it a total of about 10 minutes. When I got it home I drained all the oil (was dark but no water or shavings), put new oil in, took off the air filter, put a shot of new oil down the cylinder its self, cleaned the spark plug, and restarted it. I let it run for about a minutes until it was spitting oil out the exhaust and shut it down. It idled fine and started fine, but no power and smoking! I took the spark plug out and there was no carbon built up or oil.

I re drained all the oil again and repeated the process. Didn't get any better. So I took off the exhaust completely and stuck my finger in the cylinder. There was definitely oil coming from the exhaust. I cycled the cylinder for some time and no oil came out the spark plug hole. The little I ran the atv after I changed the oil changes wasn't long enough to tell me how much oil was being burnt.

Not sure if that sounds like an exhaust valve leak or not...

sounds like a bad ring or the two oil rings are lined up, not turn away from one another
