Default 86 trx250 driveshaft

first off i would like to say hi to everyone on here.

ok, so i have an 86 trx250 fourtrax (shaft drive) im rebuilding, and have run into a snag. when running in 4th or 5th gear and i crack the throttle i get a cracking noise from the front of the drive shaft (closest to engine), im not sure if it is the u-joint or not. this also happens when slowing down, but it does not happen in 1st-3rd, no matter how hard i hit the throttle. has anyone ever experienced this?

ok so i replace the u-joint, and the noise is still there, seems to be internal at the back for the engine, and you can feel it in the left foot peg, i drained the oil and inspected it, and there were no shavings of any sort. adjusting the clutch makes a small bit of difference if i back it all the way out but then all im doing is tearing up the clutch by slipping. somebody got to have some idea, HELP!!!!

I hate to say this but it sounds like a tranny problem with 4th & 5th gear. They must have something in common inside the tranny.

I don't know enough about tranny's to answer that. But I do know that some of the gears share certain other gears.

I know. The reply you wanted was "Oh, mine has made that same noise for years. It's nothing. Keep riding." No such luck though.
