My 97' 300ex won't crank with the electric start. The starter is fine but when you turn it over something in the case is making an awful clanking noise.(like the gears aren't meshing or one is moving around). I took the cover off where the starter shaft is along with the other two shafts that go into the crankcase. Nothing looks messed up, all teeth are there, no visible metal or chips. The last pair of gears on the bottom left that are held on with the snap rings are freely moving along with the shaft with the cover off . I don't know if this is normal or not.
