GPS Recommendations ?
#1
Just returned from 3 days in the Sierra's, and after going through a role of flagging tape decided it's time for a GPS. I have a 2007 680 Rincon. Have read a few reviews i.e. TOMTOM vs. Garmin but none were specific to ATV's. Any help would be welcomed.

all i can tell you is i have a lowrance h20 and it works awsome! it can handle getting wet its easy to use has a acc plug adapter (plug it into your atv if you have acc plug) it has maps stored in it ,accepts SD cards for great lakes and hotpots maps (you probably dont care about that though). seriously though for what you what your looking for just atv use? you cant go wrong with a garmen Etrex I used one onlake michigan for 2 years and it did its job (got me back to the harbor in fog. the price is right on them 100 bucks and the h20 goes for 179.00 now. lotsofgood ones out there.

I agree with the Garmin Etrex. I have one and it does what I need. It has a feature called Tracks. What this does is track you as long as it's on and draws a map of the path that you have taken. Come time to go back, you simply follow the track backwards. I will say however, that you also need to carry a compass. This is because a GPS will tell you to go east to a certain destination that you asked for, but it will NOT show you which way east IS unless you are moving. So if you stop to look at your GPS and it tells you to go east, get the compass out and see which way east is before you head out.

I have had GPS's ever since they hit the makret, to many to list but my favorate one to take on my ATV is my Garmin Rhino 530HCX as its perfectly accurate in the thickest of trees and also has a GRS radio that lets you see where your friends are! I also have a Oregon 300 with a 2gb sd card in it and uploaded the entire country TOPO and its also a great GPS. I keep the Rhino on my rubicon and the Oregon 300 on my CRF450X and XR250r, both are amazing- here is a pict of a ride with the Oregon 300 on my plated XR

The one I like best is the Garmin 76csx.
It was built mostly with boaters in mind (waterproof, floats).
It has a nice color screen, their topo maps are decent, and it is easy to navigate through the menus. I also like that it takes a removeable memory card, so you can get a huge one, or one for western USA and one for eastern, or whatever.
It also has a compass built in, so it will show you which way to go even when stopped, which is nice. The last one I had did not have that feature, so I also used a compass.
I still always carry a paper map and compass, but more for a backup, as I don't like to totally rely on any piece of equipment way out in the sticks.
