Default recon problems

okay so i got a recon this weekend. i traded a blown up blaster for it and the recon had some probs in the back end believed to be the u joint but im not to sure. when i start it the engine runs like a beaut btw. but i shift to first go to take off and she starts grinding opinions please? and also it needs its valves adjusted it has a slight tapping towards the top end no smoke coming out of the exhaust tho. also the drain plug for the oil is stripped is that able to be retapped or no? other then those problems the fourwheeler is in great shape i took it to the shop today to find out what is wrong with the backend then im buying the parts and fixing my self.

welcome to the forums! the slight tapping at the top end leads me to believe it is related to the grinding when you first shift into gear. did the mechanic say what was wrong? maybe a new pumpkin?

Well, if you're mechanical at all, take it apart. Go to DGY.com and look at an exploded view. Get a Honda service manual and Go for it. If it's already bad, what harm can you do?

i concur. if you take it apart and its a mess and all looks bad, or you cant put it back together, just take it in! you have nothing to lose by trying yourself first except saving a few $$...

What model is this recon? Reason I ask is my Dad's got a Foreman that stripped the splines on the axle that turns the ring gear. $100 and fixed it.

Yes. I would agree with this one. Unless you are a mechanical and have a great experience in this, then you can do that by yourself.
