Has anybody tried synthetic in a Rubi?? I was wondering about the effect on the tranny? What would you consider a good breakin period before putting it in? I live where it gets both very cold and very hot, and have always had good luck with it in other models.

I can't speak for the Rubicon but we run Mobil 1 in a Honda TRX 300, Recon and Rancher and it is always slick either hot or cold. It seems the engines run cooler too when we are creeping along in granny first gears. We listened to the other comments on the forum and the Mobil 1 seems to be a good oil for these engines.

No I don't think you can run synthetic in a ruby
becouse synthetic is so slick your tranny won't
have enough hydroulic pressure to turn the wheels
I may be wrong but I would hate to see you burn
up a tranny trying

My dealer told me to run a high grade synthetic oil in my rubi if I did not use the Honda brand.
I haven't had to change my oil yet.

Yes, have been running synthetic in two ES's and the Rubicon. No problems at all. Using 20W-50 in the ES models (air-cooled), and 10W-30 in the Ruby (water-cooled.) Both Valvoline. Have been doing a lot of research into synthetic lubricants, and can see no down side except the price. They are superior to fossil-based oil. Just don't buy the cheapies you see coming on the shelves lately, as there is wide latitude as to what can be called a "synthetic." Honda oil is possibly O.K., but I can recall when a major testing facility rated "factory" (Ford and GM) oils at the bottom of the heap. Retrieve the following .pdf file for some good reading on synthetics, it will make you a believer.
