'87 trx 250 starting question
My trx has been a great starter and all of a sudden is being finicky in the cold. It will fire right away and idle for a couple of seconds and then I can't get it to fire w/o leaving it sit for a few minutes. It doesn't seem to matter if I choke it or not. It won't stay running or fire again until setting. Any ideas what I should look at?? I just seviced it with an oil/filter/spark plug change and it was loving life after this.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I would recommend cleaning the carb if you have not already, if you have trash in the slow/idle jet it will give you all sorts of fits. I have a 94 trx300 and it has exhibited similar symtoms when I had a clogged carb jet. And as I had also told another fellow on her all my problems resulted from my metal gas tank. However the installation of an in-line fuel filter took care of that problem. Before I was continually getting trash in the carb from the fuel tank....

Dumb me, I checked the tank and it was low. Put it on reserve and fired right up. Another question I have is that my garage has had a strong gas smell since I have had this wheeler. Do they evaporate fuel at a large level if the vent is left open? I know the manual says to make sure to close it after each use. I know that the wheeler was put away running fine, I just can't believe that it was so close to needing to be switched to the reserve. The odor makes me question the vent.

Vent? You mean on the gas cap? My 87 250X does not have a vent on the gas cap but it has a breather hose but no open/close vent. I leave my gas valve on all the time and there is no gas smell in my garage. It could be leaking somewhere and then evaporating so there will be no trace of it. I would start by looking really close for wet spots on the carb, tank, lines, etc.
