Default Would you buy a 400ex that needed work?

I know they are sometimes refered to as the best trail quad ever but would you buy one for 750 if it needed work. I have found one that look as though it has sat outside for a while. Its plastics have been painted terrible, its seat is faded. It needs a timing chain, so they say. They heard it slapping and went to change it but then figured out they were over there head. They disconnected the clutch and took the cover off. Thats as far as they got. They have also just lost their job and need the money. They were asking but i have them down to 750. Everything else seems good. Its a 2001 so its going to need work anyways but im the worse person ever about buying something and paying too much. here a bad picture

If you're going to do the work yourself, then yes. If you're going to take it to someone to fix, it's gonna be $$$$$.

From discription and the pic I'm sorry to say that bike (not running) is worth no more than $500.00.

I agree with honkaw It looks in extremely rough shape and since it doesnt run i wouldnt pay more than 500 bucks for. You might end up spending several hundred in pistons/vlaves/etc if they said they heard it slapping. I personally wouldnt go over 500 bucks. Set em straight and tell em that the big thing is that the motor doesnt run so 500 is your top dollar.

that bike looks beat. i wouldn't pay no more than $500. if you're mechanically inclined and have free time in your hand, go for it, make it your project.

I'm with knowsalot. Timing chain problems are common. They can be fixed if your handy with a wrench. Tellem it needs lots of work and bring him 650 in cash. Oh, and go with a heavy duty chain and check the guides because they are known to break.

Don't you love it when you get ten diffrent answers to a simple queston ? I've bought plenty of basket cases and the problem is with out it running you really don't know what your getting you may or may not have transmission problems or it may just nickel and dime you , but me personaly I would never pay more than $500.00 for this bike. Please keep in mind alot of times the answers you get on this forum are from younger riders who are still learning the ropes. Hopefully Hondamechanic will see this post ,he is totaly reliable and very knowledgeable about these bikes.

Totally agree with Honkaw. Since it isn't currently running, there are just so many possibilities as to what might need work. I would offer $500.00 if you are looking to do your own work. Otherwise I would likely walk. Lots of 400's out there.

That brings up a good point. Some people (myself included) don't mind taking a risk. For some working on things is a hobby. If your patient and don't mind working on it it might pay off. If you want something to ride tomorrow look elsewhere.

11 different answers! : )
