That is interesting and makes sense....except that the slipping or "bad shifting" I experienced happened at all times. Even after riding for several hours (I assume it would be warmed up by then).

Maybe the problem I had was from the O-ring/low oil pressure. Either way, its not my problem anymore

true that!

my damn truck has been through 3 tranny's in the last year (you remember that ) and rides on a flat smooth road 99% of the time!

Have to agree there as well- there is some maintenance involved with a cvt (very little) whereas with the honda tranny / clutch you just have to change the motor oil and you're covered-

Yeah, there is a pressure test procedure which would tell you if you have the bad O ring. It looks like the replacement isn't that bad (take front cover off, with engine in frame, but I think you need the puller for the torque converter if I recall correctly).

My buddy has an 03 that has been perfect, as has my 06.

If you are trying to climb slowly over obstacles, or maneuver through water, a high power machine with a belt that grabs suddenly and gets wet in the water is not a good thing!..period
A ATV with a low range will out crawl a ATV with no low range ,its about gearing not power. You have to be almost over you gas take for water to get into the belt housing and if your that high, water getting into the air box as well belt drive or not.

I had a 450 foreman, and ride with a 500 Foreman, in low range I can out grunt both and in high range I can go alot quicker. Honda even tells people not to buy the Rincon for work because it only has 3 gears none of which are considered low geared. For work they say get the Rubicon with a low range or Foreman with a very low 1st gear.

Plus for some obstacles and trail conditions, you may need True AWD not 3x4 and Honda in all its wisdom is the last hold out for a AWD system, even aftermarket companies make $400 diff lockers for them because there is a demand.

Here is a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8e6Ni8PCA3s ATV Television Test - 2004 Honda Rincon review its a 2004 they call the Rincons tranny "Silly" it a 2004 model but the Rincon like all Honda Utilities have not changed much and the tranny certainly has not.

In Utility ATVs Honda is lagging behind the curve vs the rest.

exactly- it's all in the gearing. I can slowly crawl over rocky river beds just fine, and the only atv I've ever owned that would take on moisture in the cvt housing and slip was my BF (chronic slippage!)- I've had (all) my can-am's burried in water & mud and have never experienced a slipping cvt- I've ridden down rivers with the motor totally under water and never had a cvt slip on my can-am (or my cvt KQ, or my cvt polaris for that matter) I never seal the case covers or anything with silicon. As far as I know- none of the guys I ride with has ever had a cvt slip on any of their cvt driven atv's also...

seems like the only guys who get down on cvt atv's are the guys who've never owned one- I see it all the time on youtube- kids discrediting atv's because it has an automatic tranny with a cvt clutch until they get spanked by one

One of these day's, Honda is going to pull a fire breathing monster out of their a$$- they are due for one.

Honda needs to lose the OHV motors and use a OHC like everyone else or there always going to lose the power war.
