Default honda turns up a new problem

hello again.

ive got a 2001 honda recon, im in the middle of replacing piston rings, cylinder, piston, and possibly a crank rod or crankshaft when i figure out where the knocking is coming from, BUT now ive got another issue.

Previous owner.... the smart guy he was, didnt replace the rear brake shoes, instead pulled them out, loosened the brake lines so the pedal brake doesnt grab and cut 2 brake lines leading to the front of the atv. Now im guessing that i can just tighten the bolts for the brake pedal once i have installed the new brake shoes (if nothing else looks wrong) right?

As far as the brake lines that were cut. They are 2 black hose lines about 1/8" to 3/16" inch roughly that come from the rear brake on the top and lead to the front of the atv (have not located where they lead to yet) but are these brake fluid lines? or what are they and are they imperative to have? if they are brake fluid lines, why wouldnt they spray out fluid or leak it? my brake fluid is at perfect level on the handle bars... but the cut lines are dry.

Any help is greatly appreciated

The rear drum on the Recon is mechanically actuated, by two cables (one for the foot pedal, and one for the lever on the bar). No brake lines.

If I recall correctly the final drive should have a couple of vent lines on it. If these are what you are looking at, I would go ahead and replace them, and change the oil in the final drive if it has been run with the lines cut.

The final drive is essentially the rear end.

If you don't have a factory service manual, it would be a good investment.

The lines are vent lines, should be replaced if they are missing.....
