1996 300ex help

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums and new to atvs in general. I got a 1996 300ex off of a friend who hadn't run it in 3 years that just wanted it gone. Of course it wouldn't start right away, but after replacing the battery, sparkplug and cleaning out the carb, my dad and I got that baby to run!
Now here's the trick question...how can I get it to idle? From my basic understanding of engines, it seems like the carb is just not getting enough gas to go through and fire up the engine. If this is true, then is there some sort of setting to adjust on the carb? Any information would be great! Idling hasn't been necessary so far but I would like it to. Thanks in advance!

You said you cleaned out the carb. Did you actually take it off the engine, put it on a bench, disassemble it and clean out all the ports ? If not, I'd suspect that could be the problem. How about the air filter? And how about the intakes leading into the airbox? Could be a mouse or something blocking air. Will it idle with the airbox lid removed?

I can see through the pilot jet, but what do you mean by setting it at 2 1/2? It's on there pretty tight...

[QUOTE=I can see through the pilot jet, but what do you mean by setting it at 2 1/2? It's on there pretty tight[/QUOTE]
The needle that goes into the jet after the carb is together is what needs to be turned out 2 1/2 turns. First screw it all the way in (not too tight or you will score the needle), then back it out 2 1/2 turns. Don't get the pilot jet confused with the main jet. The pilot jet (I call it the idle mixture jet) is on the motor side of the carb. The main jet (no adjustment) is on the bottom middle of the carb. The pilot jet has a needle inside of it that has a screw slot in the head of it that you can adjust with a screwdriver.
So, the starting point for the pilot is 2 1/2 turns out. Then adjust the idle speed screw (the one with the line on it) until you get, I think 1400 RPM. Without a tach, it's hard to tell what 1400 is but you can take a guess by ear. If I remember correctly, the way to tell if the pilot is correctly adjusted is to screw the needle out until the RPM is the highest, then back in until the RPM drops by 100. Can anyone verify this?

I think I'm getting the parts mixed up (I'm embarrassingly noobish). Thanks again for your help! I think this might be the trick from your description of the part...
