2000 Ricon charging problem
#1
Does anyone have the answer to solving a charging problem with the 250 Recon? I have replaced the battery already but it won't crank the starter after sitting a week or so. Usually after it's pull started it will start from the button, but if I don't ride for a while it won't crank over.

I'd begin by taking a few readings with a multi-meter.
Since it starts after it has run a while, I'd assume it is charging, but it would be nice to know at what voltage.
Disconnect the battery and recharge it, preferably with an automatic charger at a slow rate.
Put it back in and take a voltage reading across the terminals, with the engine off, and with it running and reved up a bit.
Then I'd also check for excessive battery draw with the key off. With everything off, unhook the negative cable and take an amp meter reading between the negative cable and the negative terminal of the battery.
Start with the meter on a pretty high range (say 10 Amp) so as not to peg the thing out if there is major draw. If you don't get anything at that range, drop it down to the miliamp range.
A couple miliamps would be normal. Above that you have a problem.
If you do find excessive key-off draw, I'd first unhook any aftermarket accessories and see if that makes it go away.
If not, unhook the rectifier/regulator, and see if that is it.
If the thing is charging and doesn't have high key-off draw, then I'd start suspecting a defective battery. Unhook it from the quad and charge it fully. Take a voltage reading a couple hours later, and check it again after a week or so. It may have an internal fault causing it to self-discharge.
Anyway, welcome to the forum.
