Default Honda trx 250 fourtrax shift issue HELP

Hello all, i just picked up an 87 Honda TRX250 Fourtrax 2wd atv. Runs great but when i went to take it off my trailer i tried to put in reverse but think i broke it! I tried the left hand brake tried to push in a pin (not sure if this is the way to do it probably did it wrong) and pushed down on the shifter with my foot and it dropped to the ground! I pushed it off the trailer and it seems it can upshift but not down shift. The lever just hangs there and its stuck in a high gear. Any ideas? Did i kill it already??

is there a bolt in a hole near where the shifter goes onto the shift shaft? If not get one for it and put it back on and tighten the bolt. It should run perpindicular to the shifter shaft. you'll probably have to leave the bolt out to get the shifter back on the shaft. It should be a splined shaft with a groove around it for the bolt to fit in inside the shift lever. if the splines are bad you'll have to wait till somebody that HASN'T welded it on to tell ya how to actually fix it

Ah i think youre right! It does have a bolt in it but when i tool the shift lever off it looks pretty worn! Its just spinning on the spline shaft. Anyone know where to buy a new shift lever?? Thanks!

Is it just the lever that's bad or is the shaft bad too?

I would think that if it's the 250X, a 300EX of any year would fit. DGY might be aboe to help.

So would it be bad to weld it on? I think both spines are pretty worn. I wonder how much work is involved with changing the inner part...

I would say not too.... mainly because if it breaks, you will have a he!! of a time changing it.... MUCH stranger things have happend then a broken shifter from a little riding If it's a MUST do kinda thing then go ahead, but I can't see it being that bad unless it's been loose for a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time....
