I'm thinking about getting one of the IMS 4+ gallon gas tanks for my 400EX. I've seen many of these for sale in the classified section. I wonder why so many people are selling them? Is there something bad I should know about them before I go and buy one? The stock tank doesn't give me enough range to ride the trails that I want to try out. As stock I can only make two laps on my favorite trail which is 23 miles. There are other trails nearby that are about 60 miles long but I have never tried them because I'll run out of fuel.

2 Friends and I have the IMS tanks(Mi. also) and we havent had any problems. The only reason I would take mine off is if I went Motocrossing and didnt want to have to wear a cup. If you slide forward fast, youll be doing the "Sterilizer" really without trying. As yet, none of us have done it. Since you are from MI., we are planning to do a big trip from Luzerne to Mio and maybe back, calling it a "Ironman" trip, soon, where You probably will need a big tank. Later.

As an alternative to a bigger fuel tank, I run a DG Six-Pack rack and a fuel can. The rack attaches to the existing grab bar, and is quick to install and remove (I prefer to NOT have the rack on unless doing a really long ride). If you're in a group, this makes it easy to share fuel with other riders. We ride in large groups with a lot of kids, so it's nice to have a margin of safety.

I bought my IMS tank specifically for when I went to Utah. I rode over 70 miles at a very fast pace, and didnt even hit reserve. I also rode one day at a more leisurely pace over a 100 miles and didnt hit reserve that day either.

With my Lonestar stock length steering stem it does rub the tank. That is my most serious gripe. In aggressive riding situations it didnt seem to be a real problem. I however will be going back to stock as soon as racing starts back up. I also have the fear of ruining my night life in case of a sudden stop.

Thanks for the info everyone! I'm going to get one so I can explore those long trails. I hope they're easy to swap out because I would like to switch back and forth sometimes. I assume that they come with a valve.
