What sucks about the FMF? I have them on both my R's as do a lot of my friends and we're all very satisfied with them.
If you have the money, LRD Adjustable is an excellent choice, you get 3 pipes in 1.
FTZ makes an excellent pipe for the R also.
What pipe depends on what kind of riding you do.

you might check into a dynoport pipe,my buddy has one on a 86' ported polished motor and had excellent results all the way around the powerband.

it's not that i hate fmf it is my pipe it is a old pipe (10 or more years old) and it does not fit right it won't run so do you think that a new fmf sst pipe and silencer would work good and would it fit because it says 87-89 would it fit on my 86

The SST is the high-end pipe. The 86 R has a taller cylinder than all other R's and needs a slightly different pipe. Get a pipe specifically for an 86.
I had an old FMF pipe on mine for awhile and yeah, it sucked. Really like my Fatty (mid-range torque pipe). Seems like the engine just plain runs easier and has a lot more power!

The 86 does not have a taller cylinder than the other years. There is no external difference between all years of the 250R motors, beside color. The reason FMF lists a different pipe for 86 and 87-89 is the mounting. The front motor mounts are a little different on the 86 than on the 87-89 frames. Other pipe manufacturers have 1 pipe for all years and some provide an extra spacer for mounting, depending on pipe mounting location and year of frame.

I have tried a lot of pipes on my '89 250r,and i think the Paul Turner (midrange pipe) with the Fat Boy silencer works the best.Rev's a lot better than an FMF.The FMF silencer is restricting power compared to a Fat Boy.Bolt on the Fat Boy silencer to your FMF pipe, and you will notice an immediate improvement.

Hey Witz,
You're correct! I researched this. I just remember buying pipes, mine is an 86 and my wife's is an 87. 86 was different from all the rest and I just assumed (see what assuming will do?) it was due to the cylinder.
So, fmfblaster, if you want to buy the SST pipe, go ahead, you just may have to fabricate some mounts. Should be a fairly simple thing to do.
