04 400ex problems

Default 04 400ex problems

we just recently bought a 2004 400ex it was running great, and then we went on a ride and it died on us we cleaned the carb, and checked the plug...we tryed to pull start and when it started up it was aloud clicking noise and only stayed started for like 2 seconds..can anybody help?

#1. Take a compression test.
#2. Go from there.

thank you ...we checked and it does have compression..anything else?

What was the compression number?

It depends on how it died also. Did it just die like you turned the key off? Or did it start to run crappy and then die slowly?

If it's getting gas and spark I would give the cam timing a good looking at. I would also look over the valve gear and see if everything is good to go.

im not to sure about the number..and when it died we were going to turn around an it just stoped it didnt sound any diffrent and wasnt running any diffrent...and do you know how to do the timing and the vavels?

Those things are infamous for stretching the time chain. It will start with a light click and continue to get louder and louder. Not loud enough that it brings tons of attention but, if you listen it will be there. It may have got loose enough to break the guides causing much noise.

I wouldn't try to start it until you tore down enough to check the chain. You can cause major damage. Get a manual on it. It will show you how.
