Default 300ex axle removal question

Replacing a bent axle on the 300ex, got the locking nuts loose, backed them off and removed the clip, but can only move axle about an inch or so before it binds up. I can't slide the locking nut assembly off the axle, it binds up , could I have a burr on the axle or inside the locknut? I have used a block of wood on the end of the axle and pounded it a few times with a 3 lb sledge, it easily moves off the splines , but always grabs at the same spot just past the groove for the locking clip. Do I just beat the living day lights out of it till it comes loose? axle is junk anyway, so mashing it is not a worry, even thought about taking a sawzall to the axle to get it out. Any suggestions? I have looked at the diagrams for the axle, after the clip is out, the locknuts should just slide right off the axle, have I missed something?

If it is junk anyway, have at it with the sawzall!

It should just slide out. If its junk and giving you a hard time I would just put a cutting wheel in the grinder and cut it off or sawzall.

Well, I gave it a good looking over, there did seem to be a lip on the outside edge of the clip groove, I rotated the axle while using a fine file, got it down smooth, got a hard block of wood, and gave it 3 hard smacks with the sledge, it started to move, then it just popped off, that burr was just enough to catch it, once that was past, the axle slid right out.
