Unhappy 300ex rolls with clutch pulled in!! help!!

just picked up a 95 300ex. previous owner said he just changed oil to synthetic b4 i bought it. but that didnt seem to work.. when i shift down into first it jumps forward but then stops like the plates are just sticking then loosening up. and if its idleing with the clutch pulled in itll slowly roll forward but when i rev it up it seems to stop rolling forward. it seems to do it worse once its warmed up. And it seems like it does it more in 1st and reverse then it does in any other gear.. I tried adjusting the cable at the bars and side case but its adjusted to its max.. I also tried while it was rolling forward to push the clutch arm on the right side case in farther then it goes when pulling in the clutch but it still rolls forward.. so im stumped anyone have any ideas? maybe just needs new clutch plates? idk i just dont wanna start wasting money on parts that i dont need!...

You are right to think this may be the plates sticking. I am not worried about the oil being the cause of this, if anything car synthetics would make the plates slip more, not stick. I would replace the cable first, it is cheap and you can keep the current one as a spare if the issue isn't resolved. I have salvaged a few rides by carrying old clutch/throttle cables
If it still does it, you will have to pull the clutch cover and have a look see. It could be a bunch of things, but most likely you have worn plates and/or your clutch hub and boss have grooves worn in them. Sometimes you can save the hub and boss with a little sanding, sometimes it is better just to bite the bullet and replace. Good luck and keep us updated!

I had a 99 300ex that was in storage for over 2.5 years, got it out and cleaned up to sell to a friend of mine, got the carb cleaned and oil changed, and it did the same thing yours is doing...creeped with the clutch pulled in. I was panicing because I wanted to sell him a good working quad, but I figured it just needed a good warm up to get the clutches back in shape after sitting so long. Ran it for a few miles up and down the ditch from my house, and made sure the idle was set right, and it cleared up and now works fine. Was yours sitting a while as well? If it just started doing this, and you have been riding it for years, you may either have warped clutches, or possibly the fingers on the basket are getting grooved, and making it grab a little.

@scooter- I tried pushing the clutch arm on the clutch case in with my hand while it was in gear and running to see if that made it stop and it didnt. so idk if a new cable would help.. ugh.

and @wolv- idk how much it was ridden before me, i just picked it up.. the guy i picked it up from did say he got it on a trade a month ago and rode it a little but not much. he also said the night before i bought it he had his son change the oil to synthetic. so maybe its just still sticking a lil.. but it seems like it rolls forward more after i ride it for a while and get the motor hot but the jumping forward when shifting into first goes away after its hot.. it also seems like when im going in the 5th gear and down shift down all the way to 1st it always seems like when i shift down into 1st it makes a clunking sound and doesnt go into it smoothly.. idk im so stumped.. just need some more opinions before i go tearing sh*t apart haha..

There is a possiblility that the shift fork is slightly bent, if you are getting a rough and "clunky" downshift into first. That would be visible by just taking the left sidecover off and checking for any bending or damage on the fork. Your problem is a bit different than mine, since my creeping went away when it was good and heated up, where yours gets a little worse. The "jump" when dropping in gear is normal, the cool oil "grabs" a little more because it is thicker when cold, all shift quads do that when cold. Do you have any problems finding neutral? that could point to a slightly bent shift fork as well.

yes its a pain to find neutral. most the time just got to rev it up a lil and gently shift up and it goes into N.. so im thinking ur right and that prob might be bent shift fork.. plus the shifter lever is bent all to hell out and sh*t.. so that makes even more possible.. how hard is it to replace a shift fork? do you have to split the cases?. and that wouldn t have anything to do with it rolling forward right? thats most likely clutch basket or plate problems?... thanks for responding!

Shouldn't have to split cases to replace a shift fork. I DO recommend having a service manual handy when you get into it though. Again, I would take a hard look at the clutch basket and boss, good chance those are grooved causing the plates to hang up since your issue doesn't go away as the engine warms up.
