Default Wheel Bearings

What kind of grease should be used on atv bearings? Is regular wheel bearing grease ok to use? I know you arent supposed to use a lot of grease when doing this procedure. Manual says to pack the bearings and then put grease inbetween the gap that is between the and seal. Is that the only place I need to put grease?

Thanks

Yes, wheel bearing grease. Same for the seal. That's just to help it from getting torn against the rotating axle and to help keep water out of the bearing.

I prefer marine grease, like you use for boat trailer bearings, it is water resistant (premium brands are water proof) so you dont have to worry about it becoming a gray soup from water contamination, a real concern for ATVs that do any wet trail riding, or often are mudding or creek crossing. One tube will last you a long time, and you can rest easy knowing you have extra protection for your bearings.

Actually, now that you mention it, the grease I use is from Honda and is waterproof. It was like $8 for a can of it and it lasts a long time.

I also use Marine grease in my GUN but packable wheel bearing grease it a different animal, its much thicker then Gun able Grease for zerk fittings.

Thats why it comes in tubs not tubs.

I assume you mean tubes and tubs, but the "tubes" I use are specifically branded "wheel bearing grease" and the viscocisty is no different than the open tubs that it is also offered in, just gives you a choice on using a zerk packer or hand packing, plus, with a bearing buddy, you can add grease through the bearing cap to keep pressure on the seals to prevent water entry. Grease, like oil, can be made in different vicosities, I have seen some that is practically semi-solid, for industrial aplications,so it is possible a tub of grease would seem thicker if it is of a different viscosity.

Yes I guess thats what I mean, the stuff I use in so much thicker looking it even has fibers mixed in with it. Its not smooth gelly looking like normal grease.

k thinks everyone. I just used wheeler bearing grease in mine that is what i had at the house laying around. I am 50 miles from some where to get any other kind of grease. My next question is how often do you need to take it apart and repack everything? I dont ride thru water or anything like that, no mud either. I just ride fences with it checking snares. Hardly ever get it going fast most of the time it is in second or first gear. Thanks again
