2003 Honda 400ex tires

So I'm finally getting some new tires. I have a couple of friends who haven't had luck when choosing tires so I want to be sure of my choice. I mostly do trail riding and occasionally (3 times a year) hit the ramps. I live in Lake Tahoe and so mud is Huge here right before spring. I almost always go to Reno witch is desert and they have some crazy hills there, and there's almost always a hill my friends can go up but I can't. Mainly blame my tires but I don't know till I get new ones. Got a very limited budget and prefer to only buy the rear tires.

ITP Mudlite does make a sport ATV series, lighter weight and flat profile, it would be really good in mud, ride nice on hardpack, and give you the extra traction you need for going up those sand hills in the desert. Holeshots aren't too bad in the mud, and will give good all around traction for trail and hill climbing.

Also is it bad to put bigger or smaller tires on this quad. And what effect would this have on the performance? It has 20x10-9 on now. I just want to know cuz it's so difficult to find tires in this size

20 " tires are the most common size, do you mean hard to find 10" wide ones? 11 is fine, the wider you go, the more stable it will be, and give better "flotation" on soft stuff like sand and mud, rather than digging down like a skinnier tire. If you change the diameter, like to 22", you will lose a little bottom end, but gain top speed, if you go down to a 18" tire, it will have great acceleration but lose a few mph on top, as you are changing the final gear ratio set up by the factory 20" tires, unless you also change the front or rear sprocket to get it back to factory setting. Remember, also, smaller tires mean less ground clearance, and more likely to hang up on rocks and sticks and such.

I have been very happy with shredders on my 400, they are not the best in mud but do well in the sand and trails. They are also a tought tire and last a long time. I also had a set of holeshots, basically the same tread design. They were also a good but a little soft and they wore down faster than I liked. Like 95wolv said 20's are the most common size. I feel the shredders make my ex very predictable, they hook up when I want them to and at the same time they will break free with a little gas for a nice powerslide.

Alright so witch are the very best when it comes to hill climb and sand. Also are there any good kits to fix up scratches and stress marks on atv plastics.

For stress marks, the white lines in the plastic, you can make them go away with heat gun on low, or a real hot hair dryer, the heat "relaxes" the plastic, and the stress marks go away.this was a real problem on Yamahas blue fendered quads, you would see white spider veins all around the bolts and mounting points, so a heat gun is your best friend with that set up. Theres a product called Plastic Renew that you sand and polish the scratches on your plastic, then apply their clear liquid to fill in and give gloss back to the plastic, works pretty good, but dont know how permanent it is.

Yeah i just googled them and they look nice. Also I bought my bike in a package for 2400 it came with another 2003 400ex and a nice little single trailer. My friend got the other one and he said he ordered some 22x10-9 mounted on a rim. He said their cheap and have good feedback/review. Could I possibly do this and how would this affect hill climbing... Cuz pretty much hill climbing is the biggest thing here. Top speed isn't important to me because you don't have time to gain speed by the time your going down or up a hill.
