Default Need help figuring out what the problem is...

First post here. Tried to do a search and could not yield anything that really helped me narrow the problem down.

The ride is a 2007 TRX 300ex. Had it out in the mud last weekend. It was riding along fine all day then all of a sudden it wouldnt move. Motor was running fine but it was wasnt catching gear. You can hear the gears shifting and a slight click like it is in gear but couldnt budge it.

Once back home, got back on it and went through the gears looking for anything to catch. After trying reverse a couple times the reverse **** seems to loose and the **** basically free spins. Could have just stripped the plastic. Also, with it on smooth ground in the barn I put it in first, heard the click, let the clutch out with no gas, didnt stall just rolled an inch or two, gave it throttle and it slowly started rolling, slowly.

This has me thinking it is the clutch. A friend said it could have something to do with the reverse cable but im thinking likely not. If it is the clutch what kind of price am I looking at for parts? and what is the difficultly level on putting a new one in. I am very mechanically inclined and have done motor swaps but never touched a clutch before. Thank you guys!

I'd personally start with the clutch, it doesn't sound like it's engaging, the reverse cable shouldn't keep it from moving, just keep it from going into reverse, it just moves a lever that allows the shifter to go that far. I've never pulled a clutch out of a 300ex, but most of them aren't bad to work on.

If I take it out would I be able to see if it was bad? And where would be a good place to look for parts? Thanks again!

I replaced the clutch on my 300ex and it was easy. What I did was pull the side cover to expose the clutch basket. The large nut for the clutch assembly will be staked (punch mark on the side of the nut to keep it from backing off), unstake it. At that point I put the rear brake pedal back on and steped on it with the ex in gear to keep the shaft that the nut is on from spinning then backed the nut off with a quick blast from a impact gun. The nut is torqued down to 82 ft lbs and I think its reverse thread. I used the tusk clutch kit with the hd springs and it worked great. IMHO with the power the 300 makes the tusk kit is the way to go. Oh and when you do open it up check the clutch basket for grooves. If its got em replace the basket. That might be your problem.

Check the spline that the front sprocket mounts to.
