Default 2003 400ex is a Mother to shift

Ok, here is the deal.....

I have searched high and low for an answer to the question (problem) that I am having with shifting my 400ex. Basically, it won't shift by using my foot, it is way too hard.... I literally have to stop the bike, get off, and shake the **** out of the shifter lever to try and get it into a gear.... Yes, a gear, I don't know what gear that may be because I have to violently shake the lever up and down in order to find any gear.

The shifter lever is NOT bent, nor does it hit the case.
I am not by any stretch of the imagination weak with my foot to shift it.
This sucks.....

I have only found like 2 results on this issue on the all mighty Google but those results were two different causes.

If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it, because I HATE riding up a big *** hill in 4th gear and getting stuck.......

are you referring to the feral on the clutch lever? If so, then yes, that has been adjusted.

can the shift fork be replaced fairly inexpensively? would I just have to remove the cover and plug and play basically? I have a lot of mechanical knowledge, but have never messed with an atv before.

you will have to disassemble the entire motor down to bare bones the shift forks porbably are fairly cheap, you will have to take the right engine case off

"\In other words, not "plug and play", major work.
