Default 87 250R....only first gear?

Been looking around for a used sport quad because my son wants to make a run to Silver Lake later this year, and I don't feel like stumping around in a 700 Grizzly in the sand. Found a 87 250R for 500 bucks, runs good, in decent shape but the owner says it only has 1st gear. I know there were some tranny gear issues with the early 250Rs, do you think this could be a quick fix, or does it sound like it could turn into a money pit? Sorry I dont have more info, the current owner picked it up as a project and now needs the money to fix his truck, so he hasn't looked into the problem himself.

IMHO it could go either way. It could be something like a shift shaft or fork.
But then again it could be a main gear or gears blown off of the shaft.

Either way I would want to know why the tranny failed. Tranny's are pretty much bulletproof and someone must have stomped the $%%^ out of this thing to make it fail.

I would find out if it shifts and won't go in gear or if it just won't shift. If it just won't shift it will more than likely be something like a shift fork or shaft problem.

Anyway let us know what you decide and find out.
