Default hard time starting and running 185s

Hey everyone, brand new here. I have an early 80's 185s that i'm having a hard time starting and keeping runnning. I clean out the carb and no real diff. It start with ether or if i put a little gas in the air filter. also it only starts if someone holds the throttle down. after riding it around for a while and i let off the throttle, she dies and won't start unless i put more gas in the filter and someone holds the throttle again. I know the carb is gettin gas because it floods if i leave the gas on. Any suggestions, i really like this and it does no good sittin in my garage.
thanx

May want to check compression......100 to 160 pound would be good....If low may want to adjust values.....
