I havev 2005 400ex and i ran intona tree while trail rideing. Now whenever i shift into second gear it makes a very lound knocking noise but only when im riding. Not when im idaling? Any suggestions on what may be wrong wnd how to fix it??? I really need help on this. Im not the best mechanical person. Im just a rider.

 

How did you hit the tree? Head on, sideways, did the shifter hit?

 

I hit the tree basically head on. the tree wasnt huge. it hit right in between the front left wheel and the steering stem. it bent the ti rod.

 

Sucks when those trees jump in front of ya like that. You think the impact was hard enough to damage your tranny? You do a through inspection of the front end to make sure nothing is loose and just rattling around?
For a test I would put blocks under the swing arm to get the rear tires off of the ground, start it up and go through the gears. Trying to duplicate the knock noise.

I have put blocks under the wing arm and went through each gear. It only makes the noise when in second gear. and the more throttle i give the louder it is. its sounds loud enough to hear from a good ways away. I haven't done any inspection into the engine because like i said im not the best mechanic. im just a rider. I raced dirt bikes since i was little and never really worked on them. that was my dads job.
