Fuel range of a 400ex
#1
I have a new 400ex and am taking a trip to the black hills in june. I was wondering what the rough range was on a tank of gas. I am a little concerned abought getting out into the woods and realizing that I do not have enough to get back. Thanks for any info.

When I bought my 400ex the dealer told me the first oil change was at 10hrs, he said that was about 3 tanks of fuel on a 400ex. I get over 7hrs of riding on one tank of fuel.
We rode last Sunday, we left at 10am and came back at 7 that night. We took a few 1/2 hr breaks, and I never hit the reserve. If I listened to my dealer, my oil change would be way over due.

My 400EX is a gas guzzler. I have a 14 tooth front sprocket and minor engine mods, with that I can only get about 50 miles on a tank before hitting reserve - and thats out on the trails. In the sand dunes I get way less mileage.

Last Sunday I tooped off mine at noon and rode hard on the local MX track almost till six before hitting reserve. I was not not riding constanly, maybe 3-4 hrs actual riding time, but when I was riding I was going as hard as I could without crashing. Mine has been rejetted and has a modified airbox and Supertrapp exaust.
ITP makes a replacement tank that holds, I think 4 gals? Also Dennis Kirk sells plastic gas cans that attatch to your cross bar. They come in one and two quart sizes. Dennis Kirk is at www.denniskirk.com. Their web site is really crummy, though. I'd just get a catalog and order from that. They have free shipping.
