At first I thought it was just being cold blooded, but I realize now that is not the case. Before spring gets here I would like to make sure it is up and running. It cranks over just fine, gets fuel, gets blue spark, has compression (135psi), I pulled the head and checked the cam timing is spot on. The only thing is will do is backfire once in a GREAT while. When it does it is like a cannon fire. Shot ether at it and no change. The only thing I have noticed is that it seems that it sparks like 4-6 times per stroke. Could the stator have went bad maybe?

Any thoughts?
PLEASE HELP!!!
Check your air filter and all of the hoses running from the air box to make sure you don't have any clogged hoses (dirt dobbers, spiders, etc crawl into those places). I would definitely check the gas if it has been sitting up. Make sure it doesn't smell like it has gone bad. Then, I would check the carb. There is a screw on the bottom which opens the drain valve for the carb. Turn the gas valve off, then unscrew that screw. Let the carb drain completely. Then, screw the screw back in snug (not too tight) and turn the gas valve back on. I've had this problem with several of my bikes. It's usually because the gas has been sitting up or has water in it (partially filled gas tanks produce condensation-water droplets fall into the gas). If it won't fire up after you drain the carb, drain the gas completely and put fresh gas in it. It should fire right up after that.

Further investigation showed this. I was wrong. Not enough wind.

Only thing I found wrong though was that the top ring was stuck in the piston. Not free moving. So going to file out the ring groove a bit and put it back together. New gasket set on order. Hopefully that takes care of it.

EPIC FAIL!

All put back together. Now makes 92psi

Guess its time to take the head to get valves done.

Yeah I probably wouldn't have filed the block by myself. O'rielly Auto Parts and NAPA both have sprays that are designed for freeing stuck pistons. For the time being, consider running an oil treatments such as Lucas. Possibly something a tad bit thinner.

I just used a little emory cloth to clean it out. Nothing major. Then rinsed it with brake clean and oiled it up then put it back together.

I do always run lucas oil stabilizer in everything. I am pretty much lucas brain washed... LOL

If your timing was off then you may have bent two of your valves did you look at your valves? This will also cause the quad to back fire if they are bent.

No bent valves. All looks good.

I lapped the valves and through it back together last night. Fired right up and runs like a champ. Took it for a short drive last night and all seems good. Still want to throw a compression gauge on it again and see where its at.

Talking to my neighbor buddy that builds drag cars, he seems to think that it could be just that cold blooded because of the setup I have (not the first person to tell me that either). I am not sure I believe him, but it does make sense that during the winter the only time I had it close to starting I had a heater in front of it for 20 minutes. I don't know.

Maybe next winter I will just block it up in the garage for the season.
