Default 300ex clutch replacement gone bad..

I put a clutch in my sons 300ex. All back together now following all torque specs. The clutch lever in the cover does not seam to touch the bearing plate and springs. The cable will not adjust up either...its as the cable is to long now. I bought a new cable and its the same...to long. I took it apart a second time and started all over and reassembled. Same problem...what am I missing? It seams like a really simple design to not mess up?
Thanks.

Don't know if the EX basket is the same as the Big Red one but on Hondas you have to ensure the back plate (with the pillars) is engaged with the inner pates. Most inners are splined onto the centre but the back ones are splined onto that backplate, so backplate and centre splines must line up. You can bend an inner plate if you haven't got it right so check them for warping.
