Hello all. First of all, sorry for being so ignorant, but I can't find out how the choke works on an 400EX. I read the manual, but I just can't understand how it works, and what it is doing. They say it has 3 position: West, Sout-west and south. Now what is the best position to start the quad? According to the manuel, thay say it should be in the West position, but my quad seems to start best in south-west or south position? After that, they say you have to move it to the south-west position for a while, and then finaly put it south before rolling. Is it the way you guys do? is there a reason why my quad seems to start easier in the south position instead of the west position?

Thanx.

Not sure about the west thing...I guess that would depend on which way the quad was facing.

My 400ex Needs full choke in colder weather. (yellow lever all the way forward towards the front of the bike)

Last night it was around 55 degrees out and it started no problem with no choke.

Which ever way it works best for you I guess...But DO follow the manuals advice and try not to ride with the choke on. Your asking to foul a plug that way. Mine has no power at all if I try to take off with the choke on.

Ok then what you say correspond to what the manual say.

When needed, you put the choke in the west (forwad) position (according to the fact you are looking to the ATV by it's side) and once it is started and warmed up, your close the choke (down position).

That answer my question, I was just curious about that, because I feel my ATV starts easier with no choke at all sometimes.

These things come from the factory with very lean jetting. Many EXers get their bikes rejetted which makes getting the bike started alot easyer. After rejetting mine, I usually don't need any choke.

TRXter, what does "rejetted" means?

Rejetting means to adjust or change the size of the jets in the carb to increase/decrease the amount of fuel entering the combustion chamber. 400EX's are set lean (not enough fuel) from the factory to get past the EPA ****'s, wich makes them cold blooded and also robs them of some power.
